Class Information and Schedule

Choose your own adventure, pick which class you would like to attend. Be silly with new and old friends, challenge yourself with new concepts, and refresh and relearn old skills in new ways.

For these workshops we recommend that you have some swing dance experience. At minimum you are familiar with Lindy Hop footwork and basic moves, dancing Lindy Hop socially, and have a desire to learn more, be silly, and have fun.

Instructors

Lucy Falkner (She/Her)

Lucy discovered Lindy hop in 1999, and has since travelled extensively to dance, train, and teach. She has taken up numerous other dances, all more or less in service to her first love: Lindy hop. The rhythmic and cultural roots of Vernacular Jazz dances of the Swing Era are a priority for Lucy in her teaching, dancing, and research. Her teaching approach is to encourage dancers to get a feel for the music, to move in a way that is comfortable and authentic to each person, and to keep it simple.

Damian Cade (He/Him)

Damian grew up in a household infused with jazz and is descended from jazz musicians. He has spent his adult life in the Swing and Tap dance communities- researching, listening, performing, teaching, and celebrating. He presents Jazz dance in its historical and cultural context, and connects it back to its African American roots. He competes regionally and abroad, and his awards include ‘Favorite Competitor’ from the Lindy Hop Championships in Western Canada.

Bailey McCully (She/Her)

Bailey McCully has taught and performed across North America and Europe, but happily calls Washington home. She teaches dance to movers of all ages, working in Seattle schools to provide accessible dance classes to young dancers. Her background and work in education has made pedagogical excellence both a passion and defining quality. Bailey always aims to create a class culture in which students feel safe to try, fail, and learn to become the best dancers they can be. While technique is always a component, Bailey focuses on teaching students about how they can move rather than how they should move. She loves to explore personal style and creativity with her students, using the music as the constant source of guidance and inspiration. Just as jazz music lets you hear the personality of the musician, Bailey believes that jazz dancing should reflect the personality of the dancer. Dancing with a partner or dancing solo, Bailey radiates the joy of jazz with every step.

Mix, Match, and Mess Around Competition

What is a Mix, Match, and Mess Around competition?

A Mix and Match competition is a social dance competition where leaders and followers are randomly paired together. Everyone is welcome to compete.

You do not need to bring a partner. Dance partners are randomly assigned during the competition.

You can choose whether you want to enter the competition as a leader or follower, regardless of your gender.

The Mess Around part of the competition is that any dance style is welcome and encouraged.

Songs are chosen ahead of time but are not shared with competitors until the competition starts.

How will I be judged?

Fun, Partnership, Enthusiasm

Competition Information

There will be two rounds: preliminaries and finals.

Competition Rules

Any dance style is welcome! No choreography. This competition is meant to highlight improvisation and social dancing with unknown partners, so no choreography is allowed during the competition. There are no aerials, lifts, or drops allowed during the competition.

Tips for Competitors

Wear clothing that is comfortable and “danceable”! For example, avoid strapless garments that might fall, pants that are too long, garments that are too tight, or clothing that bunches. Know your number. You will be wearing a number during the competition. Know your number as your name might not be called. Have FUN! A Mix, Match, and Mess Around competition is all about the fun of the unexpected: unknown music, dancing with new people, and improvising on the dance floor.
