Class Information

Frankie Tranky-Doo 1 & 2

In these classes, Darryl will teach you the Frankie Tranky-Doo: a super fun and easy solo choreography, sometimes done as a line dance.

The Tranky Doo is usually attributed to Pepsi Bethel for the common version of the choreography. Frankie Manning also choreographed a version of the Tranky Doo (for the sake of clarification, we are going to be calling this the Frankie Doo). It is unknown which choreography came first - Pepsi's or Frankie's. Dancers usually danced the Tranky Doo at the Savoy Ballroom when Erskine Hawkins' "Tuxedo Junction" played. We need to remember that this song is performed at a variety of tempos, leading to variations in the line dance choreography. (adapted from Lainey Silver's Blog)

Please enjoy the video of the Frankie Tranky-doo below!

Musicality 1 & 2

In these classes, Darryl will address how to dance with the music, matching your movements to what's happening in the song. These classes will focus on ideas to match the music and improve macro musicality that can be used in partnered and solo dancing.

This event will take place at Solwood Studio.

The Instructor

Darryl Glen

Darryl Glen started swing dancing in late 2010 at the invitation of a friend. Immediately hooked, he began taking classes; travelling and workshops were quick to follow. With a passion for advancing Lindy Hop across Alberta, Darryl taught lessons in Edmonton, Calgary, and his hometown of Red Deer, until moving to Victoria in 2020.

He loves to travel and has danced all across Canada and the US, as well as Korea and Japan. Whether social dancing or teaching, Darryl loves dancing and sharing this passion with others. Professionally, he received his CPA designation in 2018, and always looks for ways to use his financial knowledge and business acumen to help arts organizations thrive.

Catie Fissel

Raised on a strict diet of Big Band Swing, 60’s R&B, and old time Rock’n’Roll from infancy, Catie was primed and ready to swing dance. After attending a drop-in lesson from the University of Victoria Swing Dance Club, she was hooked for life.

Though mostly found in the shadows plotting and organizing, she is a regular DJ at events around town, has taught classes from Victoria to Hanoi, performed with Vancouver’s Jitterbug Junkies, and competed with Victoria's Florals Anonymous at the Virtual ILHC. Catie enjoys being silly, Balboa, Lindy Hop, and flying through the air with the greatest of sometime ease. Classes with Catie feel like the best high five of your life.
