Mix, Match, and Mess Around Competition
What is a Mix, Match, and Mess Around competition?
A Mix and Match competition is a social dance competition where leaders and followers are randomly paired together. Everyone is welcome to compete.
You do not need to bring a partner. Dance partners are randomly assigned during the competition.
You can choose whether you want to enter the competition as a leader or follower, regardless of your gender.
The Mess Around part of the competition is that any dance style is welcome and encouraged.
Songs are chosen ahead of time but are not shared with competitors until the competition starts.
How will I be judged?
Fun, Partnership, Enthusiasm
Competition Information
There will be two rounds: preliminaries and finals.
Competition Rules
Any dance style is welcome! No choreography. This competition is meant to highlight improvisation and social dancing with unknown partners, so no choreography is allowed during the competition. There are no aerials, lifts, or drops allowed during the competition.
Tips for Competitors
Wear clothing that is comfortable and “danceable”! For example, avoid strapless garments that might fall, pants that are too long, garments that are too tight, or clothing that bunches. Know your number. You will be wearing a number during the competition. Know your number as your name might not be called. Have FUN! A Mix, Match, and Mess Around competition is all about the fun of the unexpected: unknown music, dancing with new people, and improvising on the dance floor.
Strictly Switch Competition
What is a Strictly Switch competition?
A Strictly Switch competition is a dance competition where leaders and followers sign up to compete together as a pair. They must switch roles while dancing.
In the Strictly Switch competition any dance style is welcome and encouraged.
Songs are chosen ahead of time but are not shared with competitors until the competition starts.
How will I be judged?
Fun, Partnership, Enthusiasm, and Creative Role Switching.

Julie Kiraly is a dancer, performer, and producer based in amiskwaciwâskahikan/Edmonton. Specializing in Lindy Hop and other Jazz-era dances, she has been a performer, choreographer, teacher, and competitor, locally and abroad since 2003. When not on the dance floor you might find Julie clowning as her alter-ego "Mooch", watching Star Wars, or hanging out with her cats.
Damian Cade (he/him)
Damian began his dance training in the winter of 2008. His first and true love is Swing Dance; Lindy Hop, Charleston, Solo Jazz, and Balboa are permanent residents in his heart. He studied Modern Dance at the University of Washington where he received his dance minor in 2011. Since then he has continued his swing dance education at regional events, and has competed both nationally and internationally. Damian has been teaching for events and workshops since 2009, and locally at various studios in Bellingham since December 2015.
Damian is available for private lessons throughout the weekend.
Matt Lam (he/him) and Angie Weddell (she/her)
Teachers of many and Winners of much, Matt and Angie are coming to Victoria to spread the Balboa rhythm around!
Angie Weddell and Matt Lam both started swing dancing in 2008 and have danced together ever since. They travel regularly to compete in and learn at Lindy Hop and Balboa events in Canada and the United States, both their focus remains in their home scene of Vancouver, BC, where they are founding members of the Vancouver Swing Society, a non-profit dedicated to the study and enjoyment of vintage swing dances.
Doesn't matter if you are new to Balboa or have been dancing Bal for years, there will be something for everyone at this event.
Matt and Angie are available for private lesson throughout the weekend.
Email hello@angieandmatt.ca to book private lessons with Matt and Angie.
Jean Michel Oblette (he/him) - MC and Teacher
Jean-Michel loves watching dancers give themselves up to the Jazz and create spontaneous, ephemeral moments of musicality magic – happy little dance accidents. He’ll be cheering for you so just go out there and show the world what you can do!
Jean-Michel takes his dancing extremely seriously. He was a non-finalist at Lindy Bout 6 years in a row, and has never been to Camp Jitterbug (Seattle), Jazz Roots (France) or ILHC (USA). Career highlights include swinging out a T Rex to extinction, being awarded custody of the Lindy Bout brandy snifter, and forming one half of the letter V.
Jean-Michel is the co-organiser of Swing DJ Relay, a free monthly online event where beginner and veteran DJs from all over the world geek out about the music they play for dancers.
